Today, Lenovo announced that it is adding an optional capacitive touchscreen to its popular ThinkPad T400s notebook and upgrading its X200 tablet to offer multitouch and high-contrast screen options. The screens, which use the same multitouch technology found on the HP TouchSmart Tx2z and Dell Latitude XT2, are able to support gestures such as pinching to zoom or swiping to scroll.

To make touch more accessible to everday users, Lenovo is including SimpleTap, a user interface that gives you giant blocks you can tap to load programs. By default, SimpleTap has icons for common ThinkVantage utilities such as those which control screen brightness, volume, and the webcam, but you can also add your own blocks for applications you like to use and even for specific Web pages. Users who want SimpleTap without buying one of the new notebooks will be able to download it free on October 22nd.

We had a chance to do a full review of the T400s with touch, which is one of the only notebooks we’ve ever seen that has a touchscreen but does not convert into tablet mode. We found the screen to be incredibly responsive as long as we were careful to use the pads on our finger tips and not our fingernails. And we really enjoyed using SimpleTap and some Microsoft Touch Pack applications that were included. But we also thought of the $400 preimum and additional .5 pounds of weight and wondered whether business users would buy this notebook if they didn’t have a particular 3D modeling or other fancy touch-specific app to install.

We all know that touch is the future, but right now there are very few mainstream apps that really take advantage of multitouch. Is Lenovo ahead of its time by putting touch on notebook screen that doesn’t swivel? Read our full review of the T400s with touch and let us know.

  1. Lenovo is one of the most trusted company. The Lenovo ThinkPad T400s has an amazing touchscreen. The keyboard is also very comfortable, typing is very easy. It is quite heavy in weight. The battery life disappoints a lot. People who are fond of gaming, this laptop is of no use. The only highlight is the amazing touchscreen. In terms of performance, its nice but not great.
